[A Town in North India]
“Shhhhh!!!! Shimmy!!! Don’t behave like this, you are embarrassing us. What our guests would think? ”
There was a cute but angry little girl (Age 7) rolling on the floor, crying. No one was able to touch and console her. What she wanted was a new Pen and notebook to write. She had to complete screenplay for her upcoming movie “Man of Steel”.
Mom was all praise for her abilities to visualize, write and tell stories in a way to keep listener engrossed and curious.
“You know, she is writing a story for movie, what was the name, umm, hmmm, Men of Tin.”
“No, no, Mom!!! It is Man of Steel.” – She corrected and told eagerly to guests, only to resume her rowdy act again.
It was impossible to stop a trail of laughs for guests and parents. Soon father made a wholeheartedly offer of Rs.20/- to brought her smiles back, in lieu of promise that she would tell her story to guests.
Within a second, she started to tell her movie story line with great enthusiasm. [Till guests sat in auto and waved the family good-bye, finally ;)]
“Our Shimmy is very talented but at the same time, she is naughty and playful. She keeps falling many times, even on the plain floor. She just plays, dances and writes. No concentration on single thing which is taught in school. Sometimes she asks weird questions about magic, fairies, witches and ghosts. The other day she asked me about how to invite spirits. I wonder how she will perform in study, unlike her studious elder sister Madhu. And you just laugh. When everything would be out of control, you will see. ” – Mom undone her frustration over husband.
“You know, how a kid acts when the age of maturity comes. Just opposite. You will surely see her turning into a responsible young woman and taking care of us like parents. And it is the age, when she’d to enjoy and do everything what she wants including nagging and crying. At least I could hug her, console her and listen to her unending stories. Don’t you think we would miss these acts, when she will be grown up and finally move away with her husband? I can’t imagine that day.” – Few stars made of light, reflected in his tears, waiting to roll down and he wiped them.
Father was right. Despite of her adventurous childhood filled with naughty acts, she had grown into a studious girl, maintaining her position in Top 5 in senior classes. [Though her adventurers also got matured ;), which father will never know?]
The day came, when she was about to bid bye her hometown, for engineering, towards an unknown region, Chennai, South India. It was third of June and Father was packing her college bag, with watery eyes.
“Papa, you are crying like I am leaving after marriage. I will be calling you every day or if not in week. I pinned your schedule of doses at study table and will call you to remind.”
Shimmy had seen him wiping off tears in solitude many times or in front of everyone too, on every success, every small pain-n-fever and even after every naughty act of her. He maintained a norm of disciplined and tough father but not this time. He embraced her and his tears were flowing down the cheeks, above her shoulder.
At that moment, he opened his bag and gave her a new diary and pen. However few old things dropped out of his bag and tears of Shimmy, out of her eyes. He had preserved her old empty and used pens, short pencils and erasers.
With trembling hands she put something in father’s front pocket. A recorded audio cassette with title – “Man of Steel - By Shimmy” and “Happy Father’s Day - 2005”
Such small moments are inexplicable, intense and emotional. And their place is fixed inside the hearts of near and dear ones, like a pearl.Yes, invaluable pearls.
Finally she left for a journey, adventurous, momentous and towards an unwritten destiny. She never knew that she will meet her soul-mate in Chennai, coming from the same region, few miles away from her hometown and yes, both will fall in love.
5th day at the college corridor:-
